History of Ribji trg square
Ribji trg is one of the oldest preserved parts of Ljubljana. The foundations of the current houses on Ribji trg were mostly built in the early 17th century, and the buildings grew gradually larger over the centuries. In fact, the oldest house in Ljubljana, built in 1528, stands at Ribji trg 2. The merchant and innkeeper Wolfgang Bosch, who became Ljubljana's mayor in 1520, was the first to live in it. Primož Trubar, the author of the first book in Slovene (and one of the first books in Europe), also lived in this house in 1562.
Built as early as 1578, the building at Cankarjevo nabrežje 5 and Ribji trg 7 that houses the FishSquare apartment is not much younger. The city archives reveal that wine has been served and sold at this location since 1790. The winery later became an inn and got its present name, Zlata ribica (Golden Fish), from the rich harvest sold at the fishermen's wharf and fish market that stood here from the 16th to 19th centuries. The last major reconstruction of the part of the building that Ribji trg 7 occupies today was done in 1805, witnessed by the date above the entrance. The building survived the major earthquake at the end of the 19th century. Early in the morning on Easter Sunday, April 14,1895, an earthquake with a magnitude of 8-9 MCS shook Ljubljana. The centre of the city was badly hit and required extensive restoration. Following the earthquake, one of the buildings on Ribja ulica was demolished and the lane was thus widened to create what is still the smallest square in Ljubljana. The FishSquare building acquired its present façade soon after the earthquake and has since remained almost unchanged.
The rest of this intimate little square has also been the same for the last hundred years, enhanced by the attractive 19th-century fountain that was moved here from Tivoli Park in 1981.
In the last 500 years, many tenants have occupied the FishSquare apartment. During your visit, you will become one of them, merging with the history of Ljubljana and enjoying the charm that the apartment, the house, and the square have held for centuries.
